Eiichiro Oda had decided to become a manga artist at the age of four in order to avoid getting a real job. He read a lot of mangas, and the earliest he could remember is the one named ‘The Monster Kid.’

As he grew, his interest in weekly Shonen Jump became stronger. He started admiring Osamu Akimoto’s legendary gag series Kochikame and Yudetamago’s Kinnikuman.

But above all, he was inspired by Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball, which eventually inspired him to become a manga artist. 

His fascination for pirates was stimulated by the Japanese-Germany-Austrian animated series Vicky the Viking.

In his second year of junior high, he started creating manga seriously, generating concepts and designs that would later develop into popular manga One Piece.

He gave up sports during his freshmen year so he could fully focus on creating manga. 

Interest and Hobbies

Oda is a fan of 70’s soul music. He finds it relaxing. One of his favorites on the genre is Brook Benton. He also likes listening to western artists like Eminem, Avril Lavigne, and Bryan Adams. 

Besides music, he also likes watching movies in his spare time though he is not much a fan of watching TV.

Eichiro Oda started his career at 17 with his work ‘Wanted.’ He won several awards, including second place in Tezuka Award. 

As a cash prize, he got $5,000 and recognition from many industry professionals. His work was published in Shueisha’s Ongoing Mezase Mangaka in early 1993.

He got a job at Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, where he started working as an assistant manga artist for Suizan Police Gang.

Then he moved to join Masaya Tokuhiro on Jungle King Tar-chan and Mizu no Tomodachi Kappaman, where he got his artistic style.
