Career

Frank Babbitt was a talented violinist and educator who had a distinguished career in music. In 1996, he was approached by Bruno Bartoletti, the conductor of the Lyric Opera Orchestra, to join the ensemble. During his time with the orchestra, Frank had the opportunity to perform with the renowned conductor Zubin Mehta, who first appeared with the group in 1991 and led the Ring cycle in 1993. Frank was well-prepared for his role in the Lyric Opera Orchestra, having received a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Drama from Lawrence University and a Master of Music in violin performance from SUNY Stony Brook. Throughout his career, Frank was also an educator, teaching in various music departments, including the Merit School, Lawrence University, Loyola University, and the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University. In addition to his work with orchestras, Frank was an active participant in chamber music groups and had the chance to perform at prestigious venues, such as the Symphony Center, the Ravinia Festival, and St. James Cathedral, where he made his debut with the “Rush Hour” group.

Frank gave me one of the best pieces of parenting advice I’ve ever received, while we were chatting backstage during an Intermission at an orchestra concert. I was complaining about the struggle of teaching my young kids music and he said, “don’t ever let them quit. You’re giving them the most beautiful thing to rebel against when they’re teenagers. Because they *will* rebel, and if it’s “only” about how much they’re practicing, you’re good.” I’ve followed Frank’s advice completely and have four tweens/teenagers who give me the distinct pleasure of listening to them complain about practicing—while still keeping at it. He was exactly right! I think about his advice all the time and share it with every other parent in a similar situation. Thank you, Frank
