I recall watching old press junkets the cast of The Exorcist was doing after the release of the film and seeing how shockingly run down and aged Miller looked - so different from his appearance in the movie. His voice was shot to hell too. He actually sounded like Pazuzu in The Exorcist III from all the boozing.

That must've been hard to watch for Jason, particularly after his father struggled all of his life with poverty and the guilt of not being able to properly provide for his family, only to flush his health down the drain after he "made it". Jason seems very grounded and introspective. I don't get an asshole vibe from him. I also wouldn't be surprised if he struggled with substance abuse given his family history.
