My mom and I refer to March as the actual new year. It never made sense to us that the new year would be marked in the middle of the winter, as opposed to at the start of spring when the flowers begin to bloom, the weather starts to warm up, and the days get longer. With it being our personal new year, spring, and both of our birthday months, we use it as an opportunity to shop, of course. My mom started with this $24 Amazon Essentials Short-Sleeve Midi Dress that she plans on making into her spring uniform.

The midi dress comes in black, gray, pink, green, and navy, as well as sizes XS through XXL. It’s made from a soft, stretchy jersey that sits closely to the body and falls at the mid-calf depending on height. There’s also a wide crew neckline so you can easily pop it on and off over the head, and two side slits that stop at the knee so you don’t feel restricted when walking. 

My mom loves a dress that feels seasonless and can serve multiple purposes while still being comfortable. Last year, her pick was Anrabess’s Maxi Sundress, which she still plans to reach for as the weather continues to warm up, but said Amazon Essential’s dress is a perfect winter-to-spring stand-in since it has sleeves. It “hugs her body like a glove” without feeling tight or restrictive, the fabric is “super soft,” and thick enough to keep warm on chillier days but also very breathable for when temperatures pick up. She said it arrived with a bit of a smell from the packaging, but after washing and drying it smelled fresh and didn’t shrink.

The dress is super stretchy, and even with popping the dress on over her head the neckline hasn’t gotten warped. She has it in the black and dark green and said, “though it’s lightweight, it’s not see-through” even in direct lighting. The best part: It doesn’t require much thought when it comes to styling. My mom styled it with a denim jacket and sneakers for a more casual everyday look, and plans to wear the dress with a lightweight cardigan draped over the shoulders and matching strappy sandal heels once the weather warms up. She said it’s “made getting dressed in the morning so much easier,” and she plans on adding a few more shades to her collection.
